NYC BBQ Polo recap

Thanks to NYC for hosting a great weekend –
Boston fielded four teams: the Fantasy Boyz, Killdozer, the Travis Bickles, and Doppler Radar 2000. NYC, Ottawa, DC, Richmond, and Philly all brought great teams, and 17 total teams showing up for the tournament meant over 130 games to be played! Competition was tough, but two of our teams walked away in the money – Fantasy Boyz at #7 and Doppler Radar in DFL! Boston definitely held an edge on the injuries with Phil sustaining a mallet to the eye and Nick with a sprained wrist, until Bainesworth from Richmond dislocated his shoulder, twice in a row. One thing that’s undebatable – Boston definitely took the best pictures for Doug’s polo player archive. Top that!

If someone said it’s possible to interconnect the three most significant greenways in Boston what would you say? If someone told you that there was a 2 1/2 acre park with water views in Downtown Boston that few know about and no one goes to would you believe them? Come learn about plans to reconnect three of Boston’s most important greenways: the Emerald Necklace, the Charles River Basin, and the Southwest Corridor and, in the process, reclaim a lost park overlooking the Charles River.

On a similar subject, Toronto cycling activists built their own network. The excerpt below is from streetsblog.org

Fed up with city government, which is two years behind schedule implementing a 1,000 kilometer bicycle network, Toronto’s Other Urban Repair Squad have begun striping their own bike lanes — in hot pink.

Sick turnout! This was such a blast and we will be throwing Boston mini-tourneys all summer long, hopefully one a month.

Team night moves to the weekend – mini tourney!

Mini Tourney 5/10, register at noon and play at 12:30. Round robin format means all teams play the same number of games! This tournament is open to local Boston players of all levels – newbies and all stars.

One team currently registered is claiming that they can destroy any other Boston team. Who wants to challenge?

To be held at the Allston courts. click for a google map of all polo spots.

Roll Call: NYPWRRPT&BBQCMDE

Roll call! Who will be playing? Team nights start soon!

nyc may tourney

from the nyc site:

One day not too long ago, us New York Hardcourt kids got together and lamented about how boring the month of May is. “How could we make May any less crappy of a month to have to live in,” we thought. As is our answer to most things, we decided to throw a tournament. So we came up with the New York Pre-Worlds Round Robin Polo Tournament and Barbecue Classic Memorial Day Extravaganza. Or NYPWRRPT&BBQCMDE, for short. Come one, come all! Over Sunday & Monday of Memorial Day weekend, we’re going to try to cram in nearly 200 games, some barbecuing, perhaps some chicanery and shenanigans, and most definitely a great freakin’ time. It’s going to be a round-robin format, so each team will get to play every other team. That’s a lot of Polo. Even if you suck, you’ll still get to play the same number of matches as anyone else. As an added bonus, if you come to our great city early, you can do Rumble Through the Bronx on Saturday. And if you stay late, you can go to the Bicycle Film Festival the next weekend. That’s right. We’re New York. We effing love you.

EVENT TONIGHT! The New Amsterdam Project: Human powered cargo trikes

STREET TALK! (Tonight)

The New Amsterdam Project: Human powered cargo trikes; paving the way for sustainable delivery services
Tue. Apr. 29, 7 – 8:30 pm
by Andrew Brown, founder and CEO of the New Amsterdam Project

@ LivableStreets office space, 100 Sidney Street, Central Square, Cambridge

free and open to the public, donation suggested, beer/sodas provided compliments of Harpoon Brewery!

We invite you to attend, learn & be inspired by the recently launched, Cambridge-based bicycle delivery service, the New Amsterdam Project (NAP). NAP provides human-powered pick-up and delivery services for local businesses, organizations and universities. Founder and CEO, Andrew Brown will be discussing the inspiration behind the cargo-trike fleet and how the company will transform the Boston metro area.

When it comes to urban delivery services, the New Amsterdam Project’s fleet of human-powered trikes is quickly becoming a strong competitor to conventional vans and trucks. Thanks to their compact design, these cargo vehicles –which accommodate up to 600 lbs.– can easily navigate urban congestion and require a fraction of the space otherwise needed for parking/ delivery by a car, van or truck. And, as a zero-emissions transportation service; the NAP is able to offer clients and their communities an environmentally sound alternative for their transportation needs. Their clients include: Boston Organics, Taza Chocolate, Petsi Pies, and many others.

The New Amsterdam project was recently featured in a Christian Science monitor article: “Cargo trikes nudge delivery trucks in Cambridge, Mass.; A Cambridge, Mass., delivery company is using industrial tricycles to deliver goods in efforts to curb global emissions.”
